How Handmade Carpets Are Made: Step-by-Step

The Art Behind Handmade Rugs by Qadir Carpets

Handmade carpets are admired around the world for their beauty, durability, and craftsmanship. Every handmade rug is created through a detailed process that requires patience, skill, and traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations.

At Qadir Carpets, we proudly continue a family tradition of handmade carpet craftsmanship with more than 45 years of experience. Here is a simple step-by-step look at how handmade carpets are made.

1. Wool Selection

The process begins with selecting high-quality wool.

Premium wool is chosen for its:

  • softness
  • durability
  • strength

Natural wool helps handmade rugs remain beautiful and long-lasting for many years.

2. Dyeing the Wool

The wool is carefully dyed into different colors needed for the rug design.

Traditional handmade carpets often use rich colors inspired by:

  • Persian patterns
  • floral motifs
  • geometric designs
  • classic rug styles

The dyeing process plays an important role in the final appearance of the carpet.

3. Preparing the Loom

A loom is the frame used to weave the carpet.

Strong vertical threads called the foundation are stretched tightly on the loom to prepare for weaving.

This creates the base structure of the rug.

4. Hand Knotting

This is the most important step.

Skilled artisans tie thousands of knots by hand to create the rug pattern.

Depending on the size and detail:

  • a handmade carpet can take weeks or months to complete

Higher knot density usually means:

  • finer detail
  • stronger construction
  • better quality

5. Trimming and Finishing

After weaving is completed, the rug surface is carefully trimmed to create an even texture.

The carpet edges and fringe are also finished by hand for a clean and polished look.

6. Washing the Carpet

The finished rug is washed to:

  • remove dust
  • soften the wool
  • enhance colors

This step gives the carpet its final appearance and texture.

7. Drying and Inspection

Finally, the carpet is dried and carefully inspected for quality.

Every detail is checked to ensure the rug meets high craftsmanship standards before reaching customers.
